Common questions

What is the difference between a Data URL and raw Base64?+

A Data URL includes the media type, such as data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0..., and can be dropped straight into an HTML img tag. Raw Base64 is only the encoded payload, which is what you want inside a JSON field or a code snippet.

How long is the encoded string?+

Roughly a third larger than the original file, plus a little overhead. A one megabyte image encodes to about one point three million characters, which is expected.

Is the image compressed first?+

No. The bytes are encoded exactly as they are, so the result matches the source file with no quality loss and no silent resizing.

Which formats are supported?+

The common ones: PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP and SVG. Because SVG is a text based vector format, it encodes into readable text just like the rest.
